EMS enters Vermont Tech Bridge Building Competition and has crushing results

By: Jacques Lacourciere

Have you ever wanted to make a huge popsicle bridge? It’s an odd dream, but nonetheless a dream. On Thursday April 4th the Vermont Tech Bridge Building Competition started at 9:00. EMS entered 4 bridges, all ready to be crushed by a hydraulic press.

The VTBB is a competition about wooden popsicle stick bridges. Teams build bridges within certain guidelines and see how much weight they can hold. Wooden popsicle sticks, Elmer's glue, toothpicks, and dental floss are the only materials allowed to be used. For the past five months EMS teams have met before school in Mrs.Dunn’s room, working on four bridges with varying designs.

With EMS students being “famous” for bridges, EMS did make a placement. The Wild Mike Appreciation Association came in 3rd place for guessing how much weight the bridge will hold. The The Wild Mike Appreciation Association guessed 0.4 off from 17.2 pounds. The true amount the bridge held. The bridges entered by EMS held 15, 17.2, 32.5, and 53.7 pounds.

The VTBB has been held for many years to encourage young teens to engineer and invent. EMS will definitely go next year to the competition and has bigger and better plans for the next. This year was the second year EMS went and it won't be their last!
