For the first time in many years a new change happened on the Galaxy team. Mr. Mendenhall, a longtime L.A. teacher on the team, was temporarily replaced by Mrs. Scavatto. Mrs. Scavatto is a student teacher who has been with the Galaxy team for around four months observing the class and helping as a secondary L.A. teacher, but in early April Mrs. Scavotto started taking over the class to complete her student teaching. Student teaching is when teacher-in-training observes a class, then takes over the class for a short period of time as the lead teacher. This is an important experience because it simulates a real world experience with kids. It’s also very good and necessary practice because if a first year teacher had no experience the class, so it would be very difficult to control and might be unproductive.

Now that Mrs. Scavatto has finished her time, Mr. Mendenhall has returned as the normal teacher. Students were not only able to get a different view on the subject of LA, but they also got better at adapting to what they will need to do in high school. One of the things Mrs. Scavatto focused on was how to write about senses, which they will need to do succeed in high school.

Mrs. Scavatto originally had a career in marketing and was making good money, but found it was boring. She said, “I wanted something that was new everyday. I actually wanted a challenge.”

Through teaching middle school, she will most definitely get that!
